The Resurrection

Tomoko Sawada, School Days

One trip to NYC (henceforth known as) "The Hot Apple" and a few highly vexing computer malfunctions later and I am back! I will pretend that you (by you, I mean to address that ONE hapless individual who passed through this neglected byway several months ago, probably by mistake) care and regressing into my ten year-old self, I will tell you "What I Did On My Summer Vacation":

"This summer, I went to New York City. It was fun and really hot. I ate a lot of good food, but at one restaurant we went to, we had meatballs and they didn't look like meat at all. I spent a lot of time with my family, but also went to many places by myself. I saw a band called The Ex perform with Getachew Mekurya at Damrosch Park at the Lincoln Center. He played the saxophone. It was really noisy, but I liked it. There was a man onstage with the musicians who danced along to the music and he was really good. I also saw this band called Yo La Tengo at McCarren Park Pool in Brooklyn. It was one of the funnest times I've had. They played songs from "I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your A** (I'm not allowed to say the last word in the title)," and a few from "I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One." I was very excited when they brought a band called Titus Andronicus onstage with them to play The Misfits' "Where Eagles Dare." I love that song even though it has many bad words in it. I used to listen to Bratmobile's version of it a lot. Anyway, Yo La Tengo rocked. In New York, I went to several art museums. I went to The Morgan Library, The Fricke, The Met, and the Museum of Modern Art. The Morgan Library was kind of boring and by the time I left, I felt that I had paid too much for the ticket. They showed an exhibit of Philip Guston's drawings and I told the security guard there that I could draw better than Mr. Guston because I think I could. I really liked looking at the big Bibles at the Morgan and seeing all the books that Mr. Morgan used to own. He's dead now, but we can still see his library and his study 'cause they were made into a museum after he died. I think he was super rich 'cause he had like a million bibles in his library. The Fricke was a lot cooler. There were paintings by Whistler, Turner, Ingres, Fragonard, Boucher, Degas, El Greco, Goya, and a bunch of others. One of my favorites is a painting of Cologne by Turner. I woke up very early to go to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), and saw almost everything there by the afternoon. I've been to the MOMA many times already, but this time, they had an exhibit of paintings by Ernst Kirchner (I saw his paintings at the Neue Galerie last summer). They were so cool! He is one of my favorites now. I also saw the same Salvador Dali exhibit that I saw at the LACMA last year. I didn't get to spend as much time at The Met, but when I was there I saw many paintings by Degas, Flemish paintings, and some stuff kings in Europe used to own. I think I saw Kanye West leaving the museum, but I'm not sure if it was him. He was dressed like he was in a music video. I also went to the International Center of Photography. The pictures there were mostly by Japanese photographers. There was a video of an old man and a puppet called Toro-Yan that was really cute. My favorite pictures were by Tomoko Sawada 'cause they made me laugh. Besides going to museums, I also went to the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. Sarah Silverman was the guest monologuist. I'm not sure what that is, but she told us stories about a gay dancer, a hypnotist, and her privates. Eww! Then the other people onstage acted out scenes that were kind of like her stories. It was funny! On my vacation in New York, I also watched a few movies. I saw I Vitelloni at the MOMA. I saw Vicky Christina Barcelona at the Lincoln Plaza. And I saw a movie by a man named Ingmar Bergman called A Lesson In Love at the IFC. I wanted to go to The Coney Island Amusement Park, the Fringe Festival, the Film Forum and eat a sandwich at Katz's Deli, 'cause I like sandwiches, but I didn't get to. Maybe next time. Anyway, I had a really, really fun time, and that's what I did on my summer vacation."
